Another Gelli Print Start

Friday you saw an art journal page that began with a gelli print. It is amazing what you can do to transform one piece of art into something entirely different. Today let's look at a second page made using a different gelli print. And remember, you can click any photo to see it larger.

Dyan Reaveley released a couple packages of her Dylusions Collage Sheets and you know I had to try them out! I expected them to be smaller. The place I purchased these from didn't show a size, so I was surprised when they arrived to see the sheets were 8.5" x 11". The images come in two different sizes. The ones you see here on top repeat in the package - with the exception they fill half a page then. So they are both large and smaller.

I decided on the glasses and pulled out a couple other pieces I thought might go with them. I had an idea in mind. Then ran all the pieces through my sticker machine

This is the gelli print I selected, then I added the splatters you see using Daler Rowney Acrylic Inks. Turquoise and Fluorescent Pink.

The next step would be to trim out the pieces, leaving the sticker backing on until I was ready to adhere them to my page.

First I wanted to add more texture by way of this strip of punchinello. I chose the wilted lavender color to go with the purples in the print. Something to pick up a hint of color but not overwhelm. The little thing on the right is a finger dabber

Using the dabber, I lifted color from the ink pad and stamped it over the punchinello. My dab and stab idea. Just in random places.

I knew this piece would need more texture, but also knew my elements were going to take up a good part of the work surface. So I worked with elements first. I had an idea in mind using the car so it was added first. A Jane Davenport Paint Over Pen worked well to add some definition to many of the punchinello dots. A white Sharpie water based pen added some squiggle lines around some dots.

Remember how I keep all the little bits and pieces I chop off? These legs belonged to a rabbit on a collage sheet. I used the top half on an ATC and popped the legs into my leftover pile. I had a feeling she would work out just fine on top of this vintage car. Honestly the lyrics dancing on the ceiling kept running through my head! Hahahahaha!

Adding pieces is super simple when you use the sticker machine. Just remove the paper backing and add the element. Like I did with the glasses. To add a little more definition I grabbed my technical pen from Zebra Pen and outlined some of the elements.

Still adding pieces. That orange is actually part of a lollipop collage sheet from Joggles. I thought it might make a nice sun. The word Race came from a sticker sheet I received from Yes We Vibe when I ordered a pair of shoes. They sent me a really nice pack of stickers!

With my elements in place, it was time to add more texture. These little Dauber Duos are not available any longer except possibly on eBay. I had some from years ago. They stamp out some great dots of color! I found a batch of them on eBay about a year ago and grabbed them right up. I am sure you could do more with them, I just make dots.

Sentiments. Words of wisdom. I like to add them and these came from Studio Light Jenine's Mindful Art Collection set.

White highlights were made with a huge Posca pen. I love this large tip - 4.5 - 5.5 mm. It does take a few minutes to dry. I liked the overall page but felt like something was missing.

Then I realized it was the eyes. They didn't look complete, so I took my technical pen and added some lines in the irises. Much better!

I inked the edges with a black Archival ink pad, but it still needed something. Out came those Paint Over Pens again to add some pops to the white dots. It is a work in progress.

I had to wait a bit for all the white dots to dry, so I could add more dots on top of them. Hahahahaha! and a little more black ink around and edges and my page was complete! I love it!

Here are both pages together. Both started with a gelli print. One a little more traditional than the other. And both were so much fun!

  2. This one is so effective with all the bold black & white elements against the fluorescent gelli print background. Your aptitude for dots is intriguing in this one & doesn't that lemon just echo those wheels beautifully, not to mention the pattern of the glasses rims.
