Daily Journal Shenanigans

Image
Shenanigans! Did I spell that right? Hahahahaha! I love working in my journal every day. Well, at least most days. Some days I have too many other obligations and not enough me-time. But on June 24th and July 2nd - I had time to make art and then make a page in my Harmony hot pressed watercolor journal from Hahnemühle . Most of the critters on my pages - like this little bird - are the drawings of Chris Ryniak that I add color to and use.  Usually you can enlarge these photos by clicking on them. You need to see that top left piece. Those colors are from FINETEC and they shimmer and shine like crazy! Shenanigans I tell you! The flower was also painted with their colors. And the background. FINETEC Premium Rainbow Colors.  My ICAD cards turned into painting pieces. Not following the prompts closely,  but loosely. The background is a piece of alcohol ink art I made many years ago. This is an excellent place to 'save' it. Flowers are painted with FINETEC Rainbow Colors. Fun se

Bright Color on Grey Toned Paper

Image
Hahnemühle recently released a couple new books with toned watercolor paper. The books come in grey and beige and are suitable for all wet media. When I read that on their cover band I knew I had to try it out for myself!  I started with the grey toned watercolor book and some Aquafine watercolors from Daler Rowney. As usual I began by taping the edges of my page with painters tape. I knew there would be plenty of water involved and the tape securely placed on the page keeps the water and color from flowing out onto the entire page. And into the seam of the book. You just have to be sure it is stuck down tight.  I used a flat brush and painted water all over the page. A good thick layer. Then I started adding watercolor. I had no idea how the colors would look on top of grey but I was liking it so far. And you know since it is a Hahnemühle book it is going to work just right. I kept adding colors and letting them run into each other and blend. I did get a bit of a problem when tha

Journaling With FINETEC Rainbows

Image
Daily journaling is a great idea! But an idea that is hard to follow through with. Unless you are motivated by easy to reach and use supplies like the ones I used on this journal page. FINETEC Premium Rainbow Colors and alcohol ink backgrounds. Let me show you what I did.  I began with a 4" x 6" piece of Hahnemühle Bristol, cut to size for the ICAD project. For color I used a new set I got at Michael's - the FINETEC Premium Rainbow pearlescent colors . Lots of shimmer and shine and sparkle, the colors look different from different angles. I already had in mind to draw two flowers, so I used the Purple pan and loosely circled out two flowers. Then I filled a good bit of the background with Crystal Gold - beautiful, yummy color!  Impatient me used a heat gun to completely dry the color before I started drawing. To tangle the florals I used an Ultra Fine Sharpie.  I also  used a white Posca Paint Pen to add highlights. The prompt for the day was oasis , so I added that in s

Getting Gnarly

Image
ZenART Supplies is taking on World Watercolor Month and it is my turn to get gnarly with it! Hahahaha! Yep! It is! World Watercolor Month is an annual event founded by Artist and creator of Doodlewash ® Charlie O'Shields. We celebrate all month long in July by painting, stretching, learning and helping. This year's charity is International Child Art Foundation .  Each day there is a prompt to get you inspired. The ZenART Supplies Artist Luminaries have each taken a day to share with you and today it is my day. My day to get gnarly! Actually the prompt is gnarled, so gnarly is real close. Let me show you what I did!  Of course the first thing I did was turn to Mr. Google. And I found this awesome tree/plant that I believe ties into a video game??? Hahaha! It is called a Gnarled Ash Flower and it is perfect for today's prompt. I began with a piece of Van Gogh Watercolour paper and a Sharpie Ultra Fine and sketched out the loose tree shape.  For paint I brought out my Pear

Tips to Create Daily

Image
Making art on a daily basis is one of the best things you can do for yourself. I challenged myself with this idea back in January and apart from a week spent away for a wedding, I have pretty much been able to make a little art every day. And it has made a world of difference.  It helps to find an ongoing project to keep you inspired. Right now that is ICAD - Index Card a Day. Make a little art on an index card and call it good. √  Have other options on hand . I don't always feel like drawing or painting. For those days I keep a stack of ready to color drawings on hand. Mostly found on Pinterest while searching for free coloring pages. I love these Chris Ryniak art pieces - always fun. I print them out and color them with Copic markers. I try to pop a colored image in on every page. And I give credit to the original artist. That first page up top was for June 9 and 18, days #9 and #18 of ICAD. I used a couple Chris Ryniak drawings, some FINETEC Premium watercolored flowers, alco

Hahnemühle's New Agave Paper

Image
Today we are going to talk paper. Specifically the new Agave Watercolour Paper. Hahnemühle is always updating their paper products, finding ways to improve and that includes improving their environmental approach. They have recently added to their line a few new papers made with natural resources and terming it their Natural Line. The Agave is one of them. What to do? What to do? Experiment and play, of course! The Agave is classified as a watercolor paper so that is where I began. At 70% Agave fibre, 30% cotton rag and 135 lbs, I figured the paper could probably take a decent amount of water. My florals here were pretty controlled, not too much water. I wanted the colors to be true since I was working with a lighter color set than normal. But my background . . . now that got a bunch of water! It got covered with a good layer of water, then I started painting in some Schmincke colors. Several layers of paint and a good bit of water and it worked great! No paper issues at all - no wa
