Bennett Klein Artwork on Hahnemühle's Layoutblock
Bennett Klein is one of my art heroes in the industry. I want to bring back a post I made a couple years ago pairing Hahnemühle's Layoutblock paper with Copic Sketch Markers and one of Bennett's fabulous dragons.
Let's start by talking about Bennett Klein. He is an amazing artist whose career is known far and wide in the serious coloring community. Bennett has been drawing for close to 50 years. I 'met' him on Facebook where he manages a very active group of almost 11,000 members - Colour My Sketchbook by Bennett Klein. I joined the group and was amazed with Bennett's super detailed and intricate artwork. There is an entire line of his coloring books available on Amazon. Back in 2018, Bennett made this awesome Ouroboros dragon available on Facebook for us to download and color.
Perfect piece of art to work with on the Layoutblock paper. The Hahnemühle cover identified this as special paper for fibre pens, fineliners and markers. At just 35 lbs. I wasn't sure what to expect. The Hahnemühle website said the color would not bleed through, but I needed to be convinced. So I pulled out my Copic Sketch Markers and went to work. Due to the way Bennett shades his artworks, I adhered to just three shades of each of my colors - blues, teals, reds and golds. Just to see what would happen. And what that means is that in most areas there were 6-9 layers of color. What I expected to happen was major, serious bleed through.
What did not happen was major, serious bleed through. Those colors did not bleed through the paper at all. I did get some pretty awesome ghosting. And truthfully I am not sure what the difference is artistically but that color did not go through the paper. And Copics literally bleed through everything.
A lot of people who color Bennett's artworks leave them like you see in my first colored page above. As a tangle artist, I needed to see some black lines somewhere. Hahahaha! So I used my Tombow 01 Mono Drawing Pen to outline and add some minor details - really just boosting the ones Bennett already had. And the pen worked great over the Copics! I super love this dragon! You know how I am about dragons! And I totally have Bennett's dragon coloring book!
Since coloring this dragon I have colored several other drawings using the Layoutblock. The paper works super awesome with my Copic markers and Tombow drawing pen. I hope to be showing you more soon!

Beautiful!! This makes me think of Ben Kwok's work and OrnationCreation. How generous of these artists to share their talent with us, allowing our individual interpretation of their designs! Great work, Alice!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. He really is a favorite of mine.
DeleteGreat review, Alice! I don't think I have any of the layoutblock paper. I'll have to look at that!
ReplyDeleteI’d love to see what you do with the paper.
DeleteDeliciously colored and tangled! I love it.
ReplyDeleteBennett has such amazing piece of art
DeleteYou really did put that paper through it's paces with the Copics. I can see you had great fun with adding the tangles too - striking colour choice & I really like the way your linework added such definition to the whole piece.
ReplyDeleteBennett does some marvelous artwork! I am thrilled any time I have a chance to color one of them
