Building a Daily Journal Page
Daily journaling. I am combining it with The 100 Day Project and having a ball! Yesterday I shared that I had completed my first Harmony journal from Hahnemühle - my second totally filled up journal ever, go me! - and today I started a second Harmony hot pressed watercolor journal to continue with my daily work. A few people have asked me to do a walk through of building of a page and eventually I may even do a video - not my favorite thing to do - but for today let me show you this page in the making.
Actually I did a really terrible job of documenting this page. I began by painting the Cosmic Shimmer Shimmer paint across the page. Just using a 1/2" flat brush, some water and wide sweeping motions. I didn't worry about the colors overlapping each other - that usually makes additional beautiful color. Just don't mix purple and yellow and you should be alright. Hahahahaha! That strip of washi tape down the middle divides up the two days that I include on each of these pages. I took a scrap of gel print leftovers made with my Gelli Arts printing plate, cut it in half and adhered the pieces with scor tape. I am trying a new tape from Joggles - a lot more on the roll and a lot less from my checkbook. And so far I love it! It is called Sticky Stuff Tape. I use the 1/4" size. The scor tape brand has 27 yards on a roll for $5.99. Joggles' 1/4 sticky stuff tape has 60 yards for $3.19 - a much better deal.
Next, I picked out my elements. Each day of the project has a specific tangle that I give the group to use. That translates into a tile for me each day, so I start with those. Then I think about what I have in my carousel that would go well on this page. I have a slot for quotes and sayings, one for scraps of color, one for images to be colored, one with cute images, one with leftover bits and scraps of random things. I pull out whatever I think will look good with my background and start figuring out placement.
Here is my carousel of color. I got this on Woot for ten dollars. Great deal! It has five sections that I can fill up with all kinds of awesome! Anything I think will work in my daily journal goes into this carousel.
Once I am happy with placement I glue everything into place. I use a combination of Tombow tape runner and Joggles sticky stuff tape to put things in place. Last is to add the journaling with my Uni-ball Micro Pen. It seems to work on all surfaces. And I see from this photo that I forgot to use my dot pen in the borders. I like to include items given to me by friends. Right in the very center is a beautiful flower that Christine sent me. The colors on her piece of art worked perfectly with this page. And now I have Christine's flower where I will never lose it. And just like that Days 70 and 71 of The 100 Day Project are completed. Next time I will try to take more photos.

I'm not only impressed with how beautifully you do.a journal page, but how neat you keep your working area! My always looks like a tornado has just passed through.
ReplyDeleteyeah, one usually looks like a mess, too. hahahahaha!
Deletethat should say "mine" usually looks like a mess. hahahahaha!
DeleteMy eye was caught by that little blue bird dragon which alighted on your tangled tile.......... you've acquired a whole menagerie already in your several journals. Terrific seeing your process & the way your colour carousel works for you - so useful to have that kind of ephemera resource when you're journalling.
ReplyDeleteThe little dragon was a surprise! I love when that happens. And my carousel is perfect for working this way. Just haven’t found a good resting place for it yet.
DeleteSomehow I missed this when first posted ... but I'm so glad I found it today!! Such gorgeousness, Alice!! And I'm glad to know how you organize your goodies. Since I started *thinking* about art journaling, I've been tossing bits, pieces, whole pages, etc. into a large box. And now I have another project on my list: sort through that box. Hahahaha!! I knew that catagorizing was needed, but I hadn't thought about what those categories should be. I so appreciate your sharing your process - I have ideas now!! :)
ReplyDeleteJan, I have no idea why Blogger re-sent this post last night. But I'm glad you enjoyed it. hahaha! save all those little bits and pieces - you never know when you might need them.
